For Pioneer Day in Utah, it was fairly good weather (as opposed to scorching hot most of the time this summer).

So we got a chance to visit Pioneer Park and visit the old car display.

In Utah, July 24th is a state holiday, the day we celebrate the entry of the first pioneers into Utah. So to celebrate, Jeanne and I went to Pioneer Park and enjoyed the classic car collection that were on display. Howard Eckstein, one of the owners of the cars, let Jeanne climb in his car and start it up! It was quite exciting. She says the seats are very bouncy since their weren't any shocks in the car at that time.

Last month we showed how to cut stained glass, this month we visit another basic skill, how to clean corrosion off your glass.

How To Clean Corrosion Off Of Stained Glass

Look carefully and you can see that the corrosion is on the edge of the soldered lead line. This leads us to believe that most corrosion is caused by flux or patina which slowly leaks out from under the lead over time.

There are likely other causes of corrosion. Salt water in the air near the ocean may be a cause and there may even be some type of mold that can form on lead, but this fix will work on all of those causes.

In this farther out view, you can see the extent of the corrosion that has formed on this window.

We've seen worse examples of corrosion and have seen it form inside of tempered units we've built where the only way to clean it is to remove the panels, split them apart and clean the surface.

This oxidation is a common problem that all glass artists fight against.

Kwik-Clean comes in a spray bottle and in a jug. We chose to pour some on this time, since we had so much corrosion to eliminate.

Then we rubbed the lead lines vigorously.

You can see that the corrosion is pretty much eliminated by the application of Kwik-Clean. New patina could be applied here, but if it is, make sure to clean well afterwards and apply more cleaner.
